What do the items look like?
DISC items come in two formats. One is agreement with a statement: you rate how much "In an urgent situation, I decide and act first" describes you on a 5-point scale. The other is word choice: from four words (say bold, cheerful, calm, precise) you pick the one most like you and the one least like you. DISCTALK uses statements; many workplace tests use word choice. Both ask the same thing: which way do I usually lean?
Example items by axis
Four real DISCTALK items. Each axis has five statements like these.
"In an urgent situation, I decide and act rather than wait for someone else to." Statements about deciding, pushing and speed are D.
"A room full of new people feels like an opportunity to me, not a burden." Statements about people, mood and expression are I.
"Even when I'm right, if it looks like it would escalate, I step back to keep the peace." Statements about harmony, consistency and support are S.
"Even with a gut feeling, I check the numbers and facts before deciding." Statements about evidence, accuracy and procedure are C.
What are reverse-keyed items?
Items that ask about the same axis the other way round. "Time alone is far more comfortable for me than a crowded gathering" lowers your Influence score the more you agree. They exist so that a habit of agreeing with everything doesn't simply inflate your scores. DISCTALK has two per axis and doesn't mark them during the test, which makes faking a particular type hard.
How to answer
- Answer as the you of the past few months. Not who you want to be or who you were as a child, but what you actually did often recently.
- Pick one setting. Decide whether you're answering as yourself at home, with friends or on a project, and keep that frame to the end. If a workplace test is coming up, "me at work" is fine.
- Save "neutral" for when you really don't lean. All-neutral answers make the four scores nearly equal, and your type ends up close to chance.
- Your first answer is usually right. The longer you think, the more you drift toward "what I should say."
- No need to memorize items. Memorized answers only mean living with a result that isn't yours.
How long it takes
DISCTALK is 20 items, about three minutes. Workplace tests usually run 24–80 items and 10–20 minutes. More items give a steadier result; fewer are less of a burden. DISCTALK is short, so it tells you on the result screen when you're near a boundary and a retake might change your result.
Common questions
Can I see all the items in advance?
DISCTALK shows one item at a time, and you can go back to change an answer. How the items were built is fully described in How the test works.
What if I don't know how I'd act?
If the situation has actually happened, answer with what you did; if not, with what you'd probably do. That beats picking neutral because you're unsure.
Will I get a different result the second time?
People near a boundary can. See Why your result changes on a retake.
